dated 14.8.25. I condemned a lot of stuff - the cigarettes /20
shown were all in packets and were not in airtight cases.
perishable stuff which I believed would go bad was sold.
Only
Did you consult Mr. Melbourne with regard to the sale? I saw Mr. Melbourne as to getting the stuff off the ship as it was going bad and told him we were going to sell some
There was no order of the court for this sale.
of it.
The sale was in August. It realized $1,725.85.
This does not appear to have been paid into court. vid you take any action to secure payment? Did You report default
in making payment?
No, it was never paid in. I asked for payment soon after sale. I did not report default in payment to Mr. Melbourne, The result of the sale does not appear in any of the books. Mr. Melbourne may have been ignorant of the fact of the sale having taken place. I ought to have reported default to Mr.
Melbourne.
At whose suggestion were the Auctioneering & Brokering Co. Ltd. employed as auctioneers?
I suggested this. Hodge came to the Court and asked me if I could do anything for him.
was Mr. Melbourne informed before the Company was first employed?
Yes, I saw Mr. Melbourne and he said he was willing so long as everything went all right.
Were the first orders directing sales by the Company
addressed to the company by name?
I can't say if the Auctioneering & Brokering Co.'s name was inserted in the order for sale.
Had you at that time printed forms in which the name "Hughes & Hough" appeared in print?
The form in use in May 1925 had not, I think, the name of Houghes & Hough, Government Auctioneers.
(Shown form now in use) Was the auctioneers name
inserted in this?
I don't think the name was inserted. I should tell
the watchman which auctioneer to take the order to.
